I do not perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, and other medical tests. I am there as a non-medical, though  essential part of the birth team. I will never treat, diagnose, or prescribe.

I do not make decisions for you. I will help you get the information necessary to make an informed decision. I will remind you if there is a departure from your birth plan, but I do not “protect” you from your providers. If you feel unsafe with your providers or place of birth, I strongly recommend you choose different providers. Please do not rely upon me to ensure you have a positive outcome when you do not feel comfortable with your providers. I am there to facilitate communication, to help you with getting information, and to provide you with comfort only.

I will never speak to the staff on your behalf. I will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you and/or your partner will speak directly to the clinical staff. I can help facilitate this communication by saying things like, "How do you feel about this?", and, "Would you and your partner like some time to discuss this option?"

I work with a backup doula who provides my clients with the services described above in the case of an emergency for me. You are welcome to meet her ahead of time if this makes you feel more comfortable.

I will make every effort to provide the services described above. Sometimes my services as a doula or following the precise birth plan are made impossible due to factors beyond my control, including rapid labor or medical emergencies. If I am unable to attend your birth due to an error on my part, I will not charge for my services and will refund the retaining fee. If I am unable to attend your birth due to circumstances beyond my control, I will keep the retaining fee but will not charge the remaining fees. If I am unable to attend your birth because of your failure to timely notify me, you will still be required to pay my full fees and not receive any refund.
